What Is Scandinavian Airlines?

Scandinavian Airlines, SAS, is the flag carrier airline of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. It has been in operation since 1946 when it was founded to streamline overseas travel from the region. They are a founding member of the Star Alliance. The main hub is located in Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport. SAS has secondary hubs located at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, and Oslo Airport, Gardermoen. SAS offers flights to 90 destinations and has a fleet of 180 aircraft.

What Is SAS’ Hiring Process?

If you feel like a position with SAS is in your future, start your search online to find the position that is right for you. Cabin crew applicants will need to meet certain physical requirements. Make sure you meet these if this is the position you intend to apply for. Do not worry about submitting a cover letter, although you will need to attach your resume when you submit your application, a cover letter is not needed when applying with SAS. You will be sent an automatic email verification that your application has been received.

If you seem like you are a good contender for the position you applied for, you will be contacted for a screening interview. This will be conducted over the phone and is used to verify that you meet the job requirements. If you have any questions about what the role entails, this is a good time to ask them, it will help you decide if the position is really a good fit for you.

If you still seem right for the role after the screening you will be invited to interview. For potential pilots, this is a 2-day event, with a flight simulator test and a series of interviews. For office workers, programmers, and other non-flight roles the style of the interview will vary based on the role you are interviewing for. It may be based on competency, behaviour, values, or even a mix. You may be asked to give a presentation to a group or provide a writing sample depending on the skills you need to show for the job.

Scandinavian Airlines’ Psychometric Tests

Applicants for positions as pilots will be given a computerized test called the Pilot Assessment Test on the first day of their recruitment event. This test is given to make sure that candidates have the skills necessary to fly passengers, and the psychological fortitude to handle the stress that comes with this type of job. The assessment is given as a battery of several tests to generate an accurate measure of your ability.

  • Numerical Reasoning This is given to ensure test takers have a strong ability to work with numbers and work with numeric data sets. This test is multiple-choice, timed, and you will need to complete it without a calculator.
  • Verbal Reasoning You will need to demonstrate strong communication skills, and the ability to quickly analyze and draw conclusions from written information. This is tested through brief passages with follow-up questions in a multiple-choice format. This test is also timed.
  • Spatial Reasoning and Orientation This test will require you to be able to manipulate shapes seen from an unusual perspective, recognize mirror images, and manipulate objects.
  • Abstract Reasoning This is tested through pattern recognition. You will need to identify the patterns occurring in a series of matrices. As with the rest of the cognitive testing, it will be timed, and multiple-choice.
  • Personality Test Personality is a predictor of job performance. Different personalities may be better suited to some positions than others. The personality test is used to find out your response to stress, your leadership abilities, your drivers, and your motivators.

Pilots will also be tested in areas like memory, hand-eye coordination, perspective, and will need to pass a flight simulator.

Some position may require a mechanical reasoning aptitude test.

 

How to Prepare for Scandinavian Airlines’ Assessments?

You will not get past the testing stage if you do not perform well on the tests. Be certain you devote time to practising the skills you will need to deliver an impressive score. Practice solving math functions without a calculator, you can do this using whichever method works best for you, flashcards, newer apps meant to help you improve your math ability, even using your old textbooks for practice material can help you. Just the act of reading will help you with your verbal reasoning, but you can also use crosswords and word puzzles to help practice your focus and understanding. Spatial reasoning can be practised through apps designed to improve cognition.

There is no way to study for a personality test, but as you take it, reflect on each question. Answer as though you already have the job, but do not try to pick the answer that sounds the “best”. Pick the answers that truly describe you, so your personality profile is a true reflection of you.
