What Is Delta Airlines?

Delta Airlines is the largest airline in the world with over 90,000 employees operating in 52 countries and six continents across all its subsidiaries and affiliates. What Is Delta’s Recruitment Process?

The hiring process at Delta is very similar to those of other major American corporations. The exact hiring process depends on the job, but almost all jobs at Delta require the following steps in the hiring process.

  • An initial application on the official Delta job portal.
  • A video interview over HireVue.
  • One or more online assessment tests.
  • A face-to-face interview.
  • Passing a background check.
  • An offer of employment.

 

The Initial Application

The hiring process at Delta starts by creating an application on the Delta job portal, which is where Delta posts all open jobs. Applicants submit basic information about themselves along with their resume and CV.

Resumes and CVs are screened for certain relevant keywords. If the resume and CVs contain those keywords, then the applicant is moved to the next step.

 

HireVue Video Interview

The HireVue video interview involves the applicant responding to questions on the HireVue. This is not a live interview as the applicant’s responses are video recorded for HR and hiring managers to view at a later date.

This step only involves a handful of questions meant to gauge personality and demeanor. However, you should still take it seriously as failing this step will end the hiring process.

 

Delta’s Aptitude & Personality Tests

Some jobs at Delta require completing one or more online assessments during the hiring process. As with all steps of the hiring process, failing this step will terminate the hiring process. And Delta Airlines has high standards for their online assessments. Some of these tests might face include the following:

  • Bennett Mechanical Aptitude Test (BMAR version)This test is only necessary for applicants for technical positions at Delta Airlines. It consists of a personality portion and an aptitude portion. The test is administered online by PSI. Applicants have 25 minutes to answer 55 questions. Delta wants the best mechanics, so this test is notoriously difficult.
  • Delta Airlines Pilot TestAll pilot applicants at Delta Airlines are required to take a pilot test. This assessment will test the applicants spatial reasoning, verbal reasoning, problem solving, and more. This test is conducted online before an in-person interview in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • TalentBankTalentBank is an assessment for flight attendant applicants. It consists of 75 questions that test how the applicant responds in certain situations and builds a personality profile of the applicant. Delta Airlines has an optimal personality and knowledge profile for flight attendants, and they want applicants to fit those profiles.
  • ALTA Language Testing – If a flight attendant applicant claims proficiency in a foreign language, then they must take a language assessment. This test is administered by ALTA Language Services and tests vocabulary, grammar, speed, scope (idioms and slang), and comprehension.
  • Wonderlic TestSome applicants to jobs in the Delta Airlines corporate office may have to take a Wonderlic test, which tests the cognitive ability of the applicant. Applicants have 12 minutes to answer 50 questions.
  • Flight Attendant Virtual Job Tryout (VJT) – This assessment is the flight attendant version of a situational judgment test. It consists of seven sections, which are listed below:
    1. Work Issues (7 questions) – The seven questions in this section will present scenarios that commonly arise on airplanes. It will then ask the applicant to rank four choices based on what they are most likely to do and least likely to do.
    2. Serving Passengers – This section tests the test takers ability to develop a plan to properly serve passengers on a flight. It starts by providing information about the flight, a seat plan, a floor plan (ie. where the bathrooms are), and information about the resources available on the plane (number of snacks, beverages, blankets, etc.).
      The applicant then must use that information when hypothetical passengers make requests.
    3. Emotional Detection – This section will test the applicant’s ability to determine the emotions of passengers. It will start by playing passenger recordings. The applicant must then use the tone and content to determine what emotion the passenger is feeling.
      Note: Make sure to listen to what the passenger says and remember it.
    4. Talk About Yourself – This section asks the applicant about themselves. Delta Airlines wants to know the applicant’s plans, why they want to work for Delta, how they view the job, and more. The responses to this question are written by the applicant. This section is not multiple choice.
    5. Remember Passenger Needs – This section tests the memory and recall ability of the applicants. It does this by asking the applicant about any problems, needs, or other issues that the passengers in section 3 had.
    6. Personality – The final section is meant to further build your personality profile. It does this by asking the applicant to choose one of two statements that best applies to them. The two statements are always the complete opposite of each other.

 

Face-to-Face Interview

All jobs at Delta Airlines require at least one face-to-face interview as part of the hiring process. Pilots and flight attendants will have to do multiple difficult interviews with a hiring manager and more experienced employees while baggage handlers only have to do one relatively easy interview as part of the hiring process.

 

Background Check and Drug Test

All positions at Delta require a background check as part of the hiring process. Delta Airlines does not hire convicted felons for any positions, so all potential employees must undergo a background check as part of the hiring process. A drug test is required for positions that involve the safe operation of the plane or direct contact with customers such as pilots, aircraft mechanics, and flight attendants.

 

Conditional Job Offer

Delta Airlines will extend a conditional job offer to applicants if they pass the face-to-face interview. The conditions are that applicants must pass a background check and drug test (if required).

 

How to Prepare for Delta Airlines’ Assessment Tests?

The preparation needed for Delta’s assessment tests varies depending on the position. A pilot has a much different test than the tests required for flight attendants.

However, taking practice tests is the best method to prepare for the assessment tests. More importantly, make sure to review the explanations for the answers on the practice tests. You will likely not encounter the exact same question, but you will likely encounter a very similar question on the actual test. The explanation could help in a situation like that.

Delta Airlines is one of the best companies to work for in the world, so they are very selective at all steps of the hiring process. This is especially noticeable with the psychometric tests and other assessments as Delta Airlines requires a high score and a good psychological profile in order to receive an offer of employment.
