About Capital One

Capital One is a financial services company and bank in the United States. They offer credit cards and banking to businesses and the general public. The company has existed since 1994 and has earned a spot on the 100 Best Places to Work list because of the competitive salary, extensive benefits, and decent work-life balance they provide employees.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Excellent health, dental, and vision insure
  • 401k matching
  • Stock options
  • Educational bonuses
  • Life insurance

The competitive salary, excellent benefits, and work-life balance of Capital One results in the bank receiving a lot of applicants for every open position. As such, the hiring process at Capital One can be tougher than many other finance companies.

With that said, this article will outline the hiring process, provide tips on acing the many assessment tests that Capital One makes applicants take, and give some common interview questions that Capital One likes to ask.

What Is the Hiring Process at Capital One?

Capital One has a relatively difficult hiring process, but it’s worth it because jobs at Capital One can be very good in terms of pay and benefits. Certain jobs at Capital One also look good on a resume for those looking to move further into finance.

Application

The hiring process starts by filling out an online application on the official Capital One job portal on their website. The application is fairly standard – it requires filling out some work history, providing references, and uploading a resume and cover letter.

Capital One screens all applications for certain keywords before the application even makes it to a human’s desk, so it’s recommended to naturally include relevant keywords in your application to prevent it from being filtered.

Personality & Aptitude Tests

If your application makes it past the initial screening, then the next step is to take a series of psychometric tests. These tests may include the following:

  • Situational Judgment and Behavioral Assessment (SJT)The situational judgment test tests the candidate’s ability to make the right decision in a particular situation. It does this by presenting the candidate with a hypothetical scenario and asking them to select the best answer from a selection of answers or ranking the best possible responses.
This test can be challenging as all or most of the answers will appear acceptable, but Capital One is looking for a particular answer that best matches the corporate culture of the company. It’s best to prepare for this test by reviewing the corporate ethos of Capital One.
  • Verbal Reasoning Aptitude TestEffective communication is important for success in most jobs, but it’s especially important for success in the finance industry. The verbal reasoning assessment tests a candidate’s ability to interpret the information provided by a prompt. This test will have a series of paragraphs and ask questions about the ideas or other information in the paragraphs.
This test is normally 30 questions and, like all psychometric tests at Capital One, is timed. It’s extremely important to only use the information provided in the paragraph when answering the questions.
  • Numerical Reasoning Test (Quantitative Assessment)The Numerical Reasoning Assessment tests the candidate’s ability to interpret data from graphs and charts along with their arithmetic skills. This test normally contains 30 questions and candidates have 35 minutes to complete it.
Capital One is a financial company, so candidate’s are expected to have exceptional abilities when it comes to arithmetic and analyzing charts, graphs, and other datasets. This is one of the most important tests at Capital One. Fortunately, preparing for it is relatively easy with practice tests.
  • Glider Test – Glider developed a technical aptitude test for Capital One that all software engineers, data scientists, and other quantitative candidates are required to take. The test is an hour long and has various coding simulations similar to the ones that employees encounter while working at Capital One.
The exact variation of the Glider Test depends on the position applied for at Capital One, but this test generally focuses more on practical coding problems rather than more abstract concepts.
  • Technical Aptitude Test – Software engineers must also pass a technical aptitude assessment. This assessment focuses more on the abstract ideas found within the computer science field such as algorithms and software architecture and design.

Phone Interview

If you pass Capital One’s psychometric tests, then you will receive an invitation for a phone interview. This can sometimes be a video interview – it just depends on the interviewer’s preference.

It’s usually a phone interview, though.

Anyway, this interview is a basic interview that serves as a verification of anticipated salary, work history, and interest in working at Capital One. Preparation is generally not required for this interview. However, on rare occasions, the interviewer may present a hypothetical scenario and ask the applicant about the best course of action for that particular scenario, so make sure you do this interview in a quiet place free from distractions.

In-Person Interview

The in-person interview with Capital One is conducted after the assessment tests. It’s usually the last step of the hiring process and can often prove challenging for candidates. The interview will be in of the below three formats:

  • One-on-one with a Department Manager
  • A panel made up of various managers and HR personnel
  • A group with other applicants

The format does not change the questions, though. The interview will consist of fairly regular interview questions and a case study. The case study is hypothetical information (ie. a business report) presented to the interviewee. The interviewee must synthesise the information from the report in a satisfactory way.

It’s very similar to the case study the candidate may have faced in the phone or video interview. However, the information presented will be much more comprehensive and the interviewer will expect a much more comprehensive response.

Background Check

If a candidate passes all the assessments and interviews, then they will receive a job offer pending a background check. The background check involves a criminal record check (no convicted felons, domestic violence, crimes that cause a loss of trust, etc.) and may involve a credit score check. Whether or not Capital One checks a candidate’s credit score depends on the location as it is illegal in some states.

Common Capital One Interview Questions

Capital One asks relatively standard interview questions outside of the case study questions. Some interview questions that you may encounter when interviewing at Capital One include the following:

  • Why do you want to work at Capital One?
This interview question seems innocuous, but the interviewer is looking for an answer that shows the candidate has some knowledge about the company. If you know someone that works at Capital One, then you should mention them as a reason why you would like to work at Capital One.
Also, if the answer to this question can apply to any company, then it’s not a good answer. Make sure the answer is specific to Capital One.
  • Tell me about a time you failed at work.
Capital One wants to see answers that follow the STAR method for this question and questions like it. STAR stands for “situation, task, action, response.” Basically, present a situation, the task, the action you took, and the response or result of that action.
  • How would you improve (any object)?
This question is frequently asked to business analyst applicants at Capital One. The interviewer will ask how you would improve any random object or product such as a briefcase or umbrella.
The actual improvements to the product are usually not of great importance. Capital One wants to see a response that takes customer problems with the product into account while still maintaining the business’s goal for the product.

How to Pass the Capital One Assessments?

The psychometric tests at Capital One can be challenging if you are unprepared. It’s important to note that all the psychometric tests are timed, which adds an extra element to the test.

Anyway, the best way to prepare for the assessment tests at Capital One is to take as many timed practice tests as possible. You should then review the explanations for the correct and incorrect answers.

It’s unlikely, but certainly possible, that you will encounter the exact same question on the practice test as the real test. However, the general idea of the questions will be similar to those found on the real test, which is why reviewing the explanations is critical.
