What Is ASDA?

ASDA is a British supermarket chain based in Leeds, England. ASDA was founded in 1949 by the Asquith family and has since grown to become the third-largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom with over 630 stores, as of 2021. Although ASDA primarily functions as a retail and grocery store, their services extend far beyond that, including pharmaceutical and mobile carrier services. For the past 15 years, ASDA has been known as one of the best companies to work for in the UK. ASDA offers many opportunities for college graduates, as well as those with no college experience. Ultimately, ASDA believes that in order to thrive as one of their team members, one must prioritize service to their customers, respect for the individual, and ultimately strive for excellence.

What Is ASDA’s Hiring Process?

ASDA’s hiring process is simple and to the point. It is broken up into several stages for maximum efficiency, due to their large number of applicants. After you submit your initial application on ASDA’s website through their online portal, you will be ushered to the first step of their assessment. This is called the Blended Assessment and includes a personality and/or an aptitude test as a part of ASDA’s initial screening of potential hires. Once you complete your exam, a recruiter will go over your application and will reach out to you for a pre-recorded virtual interview if you pass their recruitment process. Finally, the last step is being invited to their Assessment Centre/Magic Event, an all-day event of activities, team building, and final interviews/assessments.

Interview Process

The interview process has three main parts: the Blended Assessment, Virtual Interview, and the Assessment Centre, also known as the Magic Event. Preparation is key to employment at ASDA. Job seekers are encouraged to practice for their interviews with test questions to figure out their answers ahead of time.

The Blended Assessment:

Once you submit your initial ASDA application through their website, you’ll be directed to your first assessment. Depending on the job, this will include a personality test and/or an aptitude test.

  • Personality Assessment The personality test is multiple choice, has no time limit, and there are no right or wrong answers. The test functions to give ASDA an idea of who you are as an individual, how likely you are to succeed in their company, and whether or not you would thrive in their company culture.
  • Aptitude Test This test is more intensive, as it will assess your skills relating to the position you are applying for. This can revolve around numerical or verbal reasoning, analytical capabilities, and other psychometric factors. The aptitude test may ask you to analyze a problem and come up with a proposed solution. In short, this test is trying to make sure that you have the practical skills for the job before moving you onto the next steps of their recruitment process.

Virtual Interview:

After a recruiter approves your blended assessment results, they will set up the virtual interview. You’ll have access to an online platform where you will record your answers to their pre-recorded questions. These questions involve daily challenges one can expect to face in their desired role and are designed so ASDA can see how you may respond and perform as a potential hire in similar situations. Since the interview is virtual, candidates should record their answers in a quiet location with good lighting, minimal distractions, and make sure their camera frames their face and shoulders well.

Assessment Centre/Magic Event:

The final stage of the assessment is ASDA’s Magic Event. After passing the virtual interview, you will be invited to ASDA’s Assessment Centre for their Magic Event, a day filled with group activities and individual assessments. The day is divided into several parts. The first assessment is a group activity and icebreaker. You’ll be given a work scenario and asked to collaborate to solve problems efficiently with others. This is to determine how well candidates communicate and delegate tasks with others. The second part of the day is the Pitch, where recruiters will present a problem and give you the opportunity to come up with creative solutions. This could mean analyzing research or data they have provided to back up your solutions. The final part of the day is a one-on-one interview with a recruiter to get to know you, discuss your career goals, and see how you can fit in with the company.

How to prepare for ASDA Assessment?

Thoroughly read through the job description you’re applying for. It’s a good idea to brainstorm experiences and skills that you have that align with what the job requires—this will allow you to ensure that your answers in your interview are relevant and concise.

In addition, use practice tests with sample questions to ensure that you are ready for their assessments. By becoming familiar with their format, you can practise your answers confidently ahead of time. Practising with sample questions is vital to the pre-employment stage at ASDA because it helps you improve your chances of passing their assessments with a good score, which will help you get hired. The more you prepare for the test with sample questions, the better your results in the real exam will be.
