What Is Anglo American’s Hiring Process?

The company’s application process is incredibly robust. It can take many months to go through the system and competition is fierce. There are five main stages to the hiring process as outlined below:

Online Application

Once you find a role that attracts you, the first step is to complete the online application form. It should take a few minutes and you should consider updating your CV for this. Anglo American shares useful tips to write your CV on their website, and you can understand exactly the type of person they are looking for.

The online application form is used as part of their initial screening process. You will be asked to complete a series of screening questions to help them learn and understand as much about you as possible. Spend some time reading the job description and company information to ensure you are the best possible fit for the role.

Once the online application is complete, you will receive a confirmation e-mail acknowledging receipt of your application.

Screening and Shortlisting

If you are successful in the online screening portion of the hiring process, you will be invited to a telephone interview. A member of the recruitment team will contact you for a short call to discuss your experience (including skills, relevant qualifications, career experience and career goals) so they can get to know you better.

This call usually takes around 30 minutes and during this time you want to convey to the interviewer how your skills fit in to the company and role. If you are someone who gets flustered or nervous it may help to have your CV and job description in front of you.

Panel Interview

If you are successful in the shortlisting process, you will be invited to a face-to-face panel interview. This is with a panel of Anglo American representatives and it is your opportunity to impress your potential employer.

Anglo American uses competency-based interview questions in their interviews to understand your suitability for the role. These questions should be answered with specific examples of times which you applied the particular skill they are asking about.

Anglo American’s Assessment Tests

Once you have been selected as a contender, you will take part in a variety of psychometric tests. The aim of each test is to provide the employer with insight to your logic, personality, reasoning, and drive in relation to the role you have applied for. Which assessments you are given depends on the role you have applied for, however Anglo American commonly uses four psychometric tests as part of their employment process.

  • Deductive Reasoning TestDeductive reasoning tests determine your ability to understand information and make logical judgement calls. Practising tests online is one of the great ways you can prepare for this section of the application process.
  • Inductive Reasoning Test The opposite of deductive reasoning tests, these tests present you with a series of patterns and you need to figure out which option comes next. These tests measure candidates’ abilities to work flexibly with new, unfamiliar information and find solutions.
  • Numerical Reasoning Test The numerical reasoning test is structured to test a candidate’s ability to apply numerical understanding in a realistic context. Candidates are required to work with a variety of numerical data such as graphs, facts and figures to extract information and come to an informed conclusion.
  • Verbal Reasoning Test The verbal reasoning test is designed to understand a candidate’s ability to make conclusions from a series of texts. It is often a written passage followed by a statement and the candidate must interpret whether the statement is true, false or if there is not enough information to say. The reason for this test is for the employer to understand your language and comprehension skills, as well as ability to apply reasoning and logic.

Background Check

If you pass all the assessments, before offering you a role Anglo American will run a background check. The purpose of the background check is to check that all the information you provided on your application is correct. Often, they include criminal checks, qualifications, identity verification, credit checks and driving license or passport is often needed. The background check is usually completed within seven days.

Anglo American Interview Tips

If you want to ace your interview and land your next job, then preparation is key. Your performance in both your telephone interview and panel interview all comes down to how well you prepare. In the days leading up to your interviews, focus your research on:

  • The company – showing that you understand the company and its values demonstrates a genuine interest
  • Role – familiarise yourself with the job description, and if you completed an application form look at it again to refresh yourself about your answers and how your qualifications and skills match the job.
  • Interview panel – try and find out who will be interviewing you. The e-mail inviting you may include this information. You can use LinkedIn or the company website to find out more about them and create a rapport during the interview.
  • Competency based questions – consider how you will answer common interview questions and prepare questions you would like to ask the interviewer.

How to Prepare for Anglo American’s Assessments?

It can be nerve-wracking preparing for these assessments, but it does not need to be. One of the most important things you can do to make the assessments less daunting is to practice sample questions.

Practicing these types of questions will give you more confidence as you will gain an understanding of the materials and sharpen your skills. This will translate into a high score on the test and the higher your score on the assessments, the better your chances are of standing out amongst the competition.
